Film Programme 2012

Record.

The film selection of the 25th EMAF takes you on a visual journey around the globe, leading us from familiar, exotic places and past events to personal, touching posts in the artist’s life. Along the way, the panoramas switch between documentary, experimental and narrative approaches.

The common theme that unites virtually 90 per cent of the films is RECORD: filmmakers and artists record what happens around them in the way of socially and personally relevant incidents and changes.

RECORD embraces the spectrum of pure observation and documentation, focusing, however, on selecting, interpreting and commenting. For the filmmakers, it is not simply a matter of pressing the REC button at the right time. The image detail and choice of camera angle, the duration of the frame and, finally, the mounting and composition of the shots taken are the prerequisites for their cinematic work. This crystallises into all manner of aesthetic signatures and non-conformities in their work.

Cameras can RECORD images; however, images can also penetrate the conscience, where they are stored and may perhaps never be deleted again from the mind. This is where the filmmaker’s work process comes in: which frames do I want, which may I use, which can I not take responsibility for showing, which must I show nevertheless.
